Welcome to Viva La Vida Imports! A queer, Mexican, women-owned small business located in the heart of the Eastern Market in Detroit, Michigan. Our mission is to connect Mexican artisans with you while promoting Fair Trade, and to counter negative stereotypes by spreading awareness of the unique beauty of Mexican culture through our diverse collection of handcrafts. We proudly work directly with indigenous artisans to share authentic Mexican folk art from regions all over Mexico. We believe that supporting local artisans not only preserves traditional craft techniques but also helps create sustainable communities.
This is a communal labor of love. Each item we carry is personally curated and traditionally handcrafted by the hands of their respected communities with love and dedication. By purchasing from us, you are not only getting a beautiful piece of art but also contributing to the well-being of Mexican artisans and their families.
Thank you for supporting our mission!
Our story begins in 2016...
It all began with a deep appreciation for our Mexican roots, and a desire to honor and celebrate our culture. This journey started with a head full of ideas and dreams, selling at local markets during the weekends. Slowly, we planted roots in Detroit and our pop-up grew into a permanent location in the Eastern Market District.
We started small, traveling to different regions of Mexico to meet with local artisans and learn about their craft. The skill and dedication these artisans put into their work deserved to be seen and appreciated on a larger scale. We made it our purpose to connect these artisans with people around the world who shared our passion for truly one-of-a-kind pieces of treasured cultural artwork.
