Alebrijes are brightly colored mystical creatures that take elements from different animals and from the artist’s imagination to create a magical being. These animal-like creatures are inspired by nahuales, which are personal protectors capable of transforming into various animals. In Oaxaca, it is believed that every person has a personal protector, or spirit guide, to accompany and protect us throughout our lives.

These fantastical creatures are hand carved out of copal wood and hand painted by Oaxacan artisans, and no two are alike.
